Why Is My AC Freezing Up? Causes & Fixes for Texas Homeowners

It sounds backwards, but in the middle of a Central Texas summer your air conditioner can actually freeze over — ice on the copper line, frost on the indoor coil, and warm air from the vents. Here is why it happens and what to do.

Common causes of a frozen AC

A frozen system almost always comes down to airflow or refrigerant. The usual culprits are a dirty air filter, blocked return vents, a dirty evaporator coil, a failing blower, or low refrigerant from a leak. Any of these lets the coil get too cold, and the humidity in the air freezes on contact.

What to do right now

Turn the cooling off but switch the fan to ON — this thaws the coil, usually within an hour or two. While it thaws, replace your air filter and make sure furniture or rugs aren’t covering return vents. Never chip the ice off; you can puncture the coil.

When to call a pro

If it freezes again after thawing, you likely have a refrigerant leak or a deeper airflow problem that needs a technician. Repeated freezing strains the compressor — the most expensive part of your system.
